Joining a Jog Derbyshire group can seem quite daunting at first, but there’s really nothing to worry about. The friendly jogging groups will welcome you with open arms.
You’ll probably still have a few questions before you start, so we’ve tried to answer everything you might need to know…
Will I be able to keep up?
Absolutely! No pace is too slow. All groups are led by fully qualified jog leaders and assistant co-leaders who are experienced in supporting beginners. Sessions are structured to suit a range of abilities and no one is ever left behind.
Can I bring my family along?
Most groups welcome anyone from age 12+. Some groups do request that participants are aged 18+ while others accept children if accompanied by an adult. You can find out more about the group you are interested in joining here
Will everyone else know each other?
Probably not. Many people come on their own and then meet people along the way. Jogging is very sociable and there’s always plenty of time to chat. They’re ideal if you’ve moved to a new area, you’re trying to meet new people, or you just want to try a new activity. You’ll soon feel part of the community.
What should I wear?
Something comfortable and a pair of well-fitting trainers. Perhaps the biggest appeal of jogging is how accessible it is. Clothing and trainers don’t need to be flash and expensive. We’d recommend clothing is lightweight and seasonably appropriate – you’re likely to get warm and maybe a little sweaty whatever the weather. It’s also important to consider your visibility in the darker months.
What if I’ve never run before?
All groups are fully inclusive and complete beginners are warmly welcomed. Some groups run Couch to 5k style programmes throughout the year which can be a good way of getting started. If you have any specific needs we recommend you contact the jog leader before your first session and if you have an injury we’d advise also speaking to your doctor before attending.
Is there a charge?
Lots of groups are completely free to attend, although some may charge a small fee. These fees are often put back into the group to cover the cost of resources such as reflective bands, t-shirts and medals amongst other things.
Who do I contact if I need to ask something?
You can head to the Find a Group page to find the contact details of your nearest group and the jog leader will be happy to answer any queries. Lots of groups also have Facebook pages or groups where you can ask questions and chat to other participants before joining. You can also contact the Jog Derbyshire team via firstname.lastname@example.org
Do I need to book before attending?
Normally not, although since Covid some groups have introduced a booking system, so please contact your local group to check before you attend.
