Social prescribing in action

Social prescribing is one of the buzz words of the moment. But what does it really mean in practice?

Last week our Fit 4 Life team were invited to a summer fair at Torkard Hill Medical Centre in Hucknall.

We expected a relatively small affair. In reality, the practice had been completely overtaken by stalls and activities. They’d done not only a fantastic job in encouraging local residents along but in getting people and businesses to come and talk about their services. The place was literally buzzing.

What made it even more interesting was how much was on offer. This wasn’t just an event to provide dry and boring medical information. It was a real holistic mix, with information and activities to cover the community’s social, emotional and practical needs.

Stalls featured everyone from Specsavers and Age UK to Citizens Advice. Baby massage classes were being demonstrated, a yoga teacher was leading taster sessions outside and a bike connected up to a blender was churning out yummy smoothies. There was even a fire engine in the car park and cakes and cups of tea were in plentiful supply.

We saw a wide mix of local residents – from those who had been in the area a long time to people who’d recently moved and were using the event as a way to find out what was available.

It really was a fantastic example of social prescribing in action.
