Hi, my name’s Katy and I’m a Community Builder at Shift. Read on to find out what my role is all about.
On a typical day, where might we find you?
On a typical work day you’ll find me dotted round the High Peak in one of the many beautiful parks or open spaces, looking at new ways and areas to implement Family Mile.
What brought you to Shift?
After completing a degree in Sports Development and Coaching I worked within the leisure industry for a couple of years before the opportunity became available to work for Community Sports Trust (Shift’s previous name) on their first initiative called Village Games. It was an amazing project aimed at creating a local legacy off the back of the 2012 London Olympic Games where people were able to participate in sustainable sporting activities on their doorstep. Fast forward 10 years and I’m now working on an equally exciting project called Family Mile which is looking at getting people of all ages active together within their local parks and open spaces.
What is it like working in the High Peak?
The High Peak is a lovely place to work – the people make it such a unique and vibrant place to be. With a large proportion of the High Peak within the Peak District I see large numbers of tourists enjoying the borough. When meeting residents the passion and enthusiasm they share for their local area is amazing – everyone is always looking for ways to improve their community and pull together to achieve. I’m so excited by how people are embracing Family Mile and looking forward to how it develops uniquely in each location.
What is the best thing about your job?
Being able to explore the beautiful outdoors within the High Peak is a major perk of the job, the views are incredible. However for me the best thing about Family Mile is being able to see families out enjoying themselves together – to see the faces and hear the laughter of families enjoying our activities is so rewarding.
In an ideal world, what would the future look like for Family Mile?
In an ideal world, I’d love to see Family Mile adopted as a part of everyone’s healthy lifestyle. People will have integrated exercise and fitness into their daily routines and enjoying the many benefits of making small changes.
Whats your favourite hobby?
I love a good dog walk – my Chocolate Labrador fur baby is the perfect companion for exploring both close to home and further afield. It’s the perfect opportunity to have a bit of time to myself and focus my thoughts before return to the chaos of family life!
Where’s your favourite place?
This is such a hard question – I love loads of places for different reasons but if I must choose one of my favourite places is Jersey. It is such a beautiful island with amazing beaches. It was our go-to family holiday destination as a child – my dad farms Jersey cows so we combined business and pleasure. It holds very fond memories and over the years we have made some great friends out there.
Whats your favourite quote?
The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing – Walt Disney
If you colleagues could describe you in a few words what would they say?
Hopefully that I’m a positive and enthusiastic person who is always willing to lend a hand and join in the fun.
