A reluctant jogger
When Jog Derbyshire’s Cat invited me to join the Draycott Joggers on their run, I have to admit my first reaction was one of complete terror.
I’ve claimed for years now jogging isn’t for me. My last experience was taking part in Cancer Research UK’s 5k Race for Life almost 10 years ago. Although I felt a sense of achievement from completing it I didn’t really enjoy anything about it. I trained with two friends who were much faster than me and I spent a lot of time lagging behind on my own and brushing off comments from strangers like ‘come on love, keep up’. In short, I hated it.
Accepting the challenge
However, I’m not one to turn down a challenge and so I agreed to give it a go. As I hunted out some suitable gear I was feeling like the world’s least likely jogger. My trainers had seen better days, the old sports bra I dug out was a dodgy shade of grey and a little bit on the tight side and my cropped trousers were revealing slightly hairy ankles.
I had absolutely no idea how I was going to get on. I was panicking I’d hold everyone back and basically just spoil their lovely evening run. If I hadn’t been going for work related purposes I’m pretty sure I would have come up with an excuse not to go.
Meeting the group
I couldn’t possibly have been any more wrong.
From the very moment I got out of the car I felt so welcomed by this lovely group of ladies. As I started making my excuses about how rubbish I might be they were so reassuring they’d never leave anyone behind. They were constantly expressing how it wasn’t about speed or distance, it was simply about having fun with a group of friends whilst enjoying some fresh air and exercise.
The most important thing was they were totally genuine. They weren’t pitying me and I didn’t feel like people were sticking at the back with me because they had to.
Feeling a sense of achievement
In the end I actually got round a 5k route and it’s a bit of an understatement to say I felt pretty pleased with myself. As I spent the whole time chatting to people the 40 minutes just flew by. I was never bored or counting down the minutes until I could stop like I would have done 10 years ago.
The fact I managed it was sort of irrelevant in the end. I could have stopped once, twice or even more times. I could have given up halfway round and someone would have been right there with me.
So for all those people who’ve thought about doing it but never quite taken the leap – you’ve got nothing to lose by giving it a go. Even if you struggle or it turns out it’s not your thing, I promise you won’t be made to feel stupid or bad about it.
